Lazarus by Harlan Coben hits Prime Video on October 22, and I guarantee you’re not ready for any of the crazy twists in this six-part series.
Without giving away any spoilers, the show follows a forensic psychologist known only as Laz (Sam Claflin) who comes face to face with numerous unsolved cases after the death of his father, Dr. Lazarus (Bill Nighy). If anything, this synopsis greatly underplays what’s to come, but it’s to your advantage if you start watching with as little knowledge as possible.
But not too little, of course, because what would be the point? If you’ve seen Coben’s previous Netflix shows like fool me once and Missing YouYou’ll know the man is the king of a perfectly executed mystery with enough hand twists to keep you up at night.
I’m not even sure where to start and which twist is the most unexpected, so I asked star Alexandra Roach (who plays Jenna) for help, and her response took me by surprise.

Obviously I’m not going to tell you anything about what’s to come, but keep your eyes peeled until the end of episode 1. When Roach first read the script, he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
“Literally anything can and does happen,” he tells me. “At the end of the first episode, you’re sitting there with your mouth open. You think it’s one thing and you’ve seen it before, and suddenly it becomes a pitchfork. You’re in a completely different world. I loved reading it when it was sent to me.
“I remember getting to the end of episode 1 and being very surprised by the ending. It comes from the mind of Harlan Coben, and he’s a great storyteller. You just don’t know what’s going to happen next, and it’s completely surprising.”
But how prepared should you be when you’re having fun with the series? I’m using my completely fake ‘wow meter’ to judge this. If a program like Midsomer Murders is at the bottom (i.e. totally guessable) and Utopia (the wacky dystopian thriller that also stars Roach) is at the top, where does Lazarus rank?
“I think it’s around an eight or nine on the scale,” Roach concludes (10 being the most surprising). “I think as human beings we like to be surprised, and there’s so much stuff out there. We’re watching content on our phones and everything. It’s really nice to have that kind of raw experience of having no idea where this story is going to go.”
