harry potter The Paapa Essiedu series star admitted that serious online abuse has been affecting him after landing a new role.
He revealed that he received racially motivated death threats over his casting as Professor Snape in the upcoming HBO Max adaptation.
“They told me: ‘Resign or I will kill you.’” The race surpassed the star said in a new interview. “It really matters. The reality is, if I look at Instagram I’ll see someone saying, ‘I’m going to come to your house and kill you.'” So while I’m pretty sure they’re not going to murder me… that could get me really old!”
“But yes, although I hope I’m fine, no one should have to go through this for doing their job,” he emphasized. “Many people risk their lives in their work.”
“I’m playing at being a magician in harry potter. And I would be lying if I said it didn’t affect me emotionally.” The Lazarus project alum said The Sunday Times of London.
Despite the price, the 35-year-old has turned mental trauma into something useful to him.
“Abuse feeds me,” he continued in the interview. “And I’m more passionate about making this character my own, because I think about how I felt when I was a child.”
He can destroy you The actor admitted he had never seen the original films, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, but had been a fan of JK Rowling’s book series as a child.
He has been signed to the series for ten years. “I’ll be 45 when it’s over,” Essiedu said, “and I know my life is going to change a lot, but I have to surrender to that. I might have kids at the end of this.”
For the uninitiated, the new series will launch on HBO Max in 2027 with an (almost) completely new cast.
The central trio consists of Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
