HBO has revealed that it is making a television sequel to the critically acclaimed video game. Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3).
According to Deadline, the famous American television network has announced that it will make a direct sequel to the multi-award-winning title from Larian Studios. Craig Mazin, one of the co-creators of HBO the last of us The television adaptation will lead the development of the project. HBO will produce the series alongside Wizards of the Coast and its parent company, Hasbro Entertainment.
For those who are not familiar with Baldur’s Gate 3: is a role-playing game (RPG) set in the world of Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) in which you create your own character and can play its 100+ hour story alone or with friends.
Released in late 2023, it received universally positive reviews from fans and critics alike (read our Baldur’s Gate 3 review to see if we agreed with the general consensus). Given the praise it received, it’s no surprise that BG3 dominated numerous video game awards ceremonies before the end of 2023: the RPG earned multiple awards at The Game Awards, Gold Joystick Awards, and DICE Awards.
In a statement accompanying the reveal, Mazin said: “After devoting nearly 1,000 hours to the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3It is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created.
“I am a faithful follower of D&D and the brilliant way Swen Vincke and his talented team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with all the respect and love possible, and I am deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.”
Opinion: HBO’s Baldur’s Gate 3 TV Show Will Divide Fans Whether You Want It Or Not
As mentioned, unlike its retelling of the story that takes place in the Naughty Dog series the last of us duology, the HBO version BG3 It will not be a direct adaptation of his story. In fact, it will continue after the latter’s world-changing ending, meaning its television portrayal will be a direct continuation of the story that unfolded in the Larian RPG.
On the one hand, it’s great news for Mazin and everyone else associated with Baldur’s Gate 3The television program. Since they are not obligated to retell the game’s story, they will have complete creative freedom to take it in any direction they want. When Baldur’s Gate 3The small screen adaptation eventually launches on HBO Max and more of the world’s top streaming services, then will tell an original story, which should please both new and established fans.
And I say “should”, because there is no guarantee that BG3 Fans will like what they see. Since it is a role-playing game, each Baldur’s Gate 3 The player’s story will have developed differently from everyone else’s. That means the end of their game will be unique to them. However, when adapting BG3HBO runs the risk of alienating and/or upsetting longtime fans by making a BG3 finalizing the canon through its television adaptation.
The ‘canon ending’ problem is one that Prime Video also ran into radioactive dust season 2. Since we learned that the final season of this show would spend time in New Vegas, also known as the main location of Obsidian. Fallout: New Vegas game, fans debated which of its multiple endings would be considered canon in Amazon’s television adaptation. The short answer? None of them, which only served to confuse and frustrate viewers who have played Fallout: New Vegasand got an ending that has been its main canon for years.
How will HBO, Mazin and company approach it? BG3The television sequel, then? Do they risk incurring the ire of their fans by selecting one of their many endings as the definitive canonical ending? Or do they follow Prime Video’s lead and avoid a problem that will both please and annoy fans? We’ll find out once Baldur’s Gate 3The television show comes years later.
