Two very different musical films are coming to HBO Max in December 2025: one documentary and the other a mockumentary.
This last one is Spinal Tap 2: The end continuesthat arrives next to the first lumbar puncture movie on Friday, December 12. Meanwhile, the documentary is It never ends, Jeff Buckleywhich is part of HBO Max’s ‘Music Box’ network and is streaming now.
Jeff Buckley’s documentary is very different. It’s a celebration of the late singer’s life and music, and has already generated hugely positive word of mouth. Decider says it is “the film that Buckley’s legacy has demanded.” I may be a little biased, because Buckley’s debut album is one of my favorite albums, but this documentary is a nuanced portrait of someone many people have hailed as a musical genius.
Why Jeff Buckley’s HBO Max Documentary Is a Must-See
Buckley was a rare talent who died too young, leaving behind truly extraordinary music. ‘Grace’, their 1984 album, still sounds incredible and you can hear its influence throughout popular music, especially the more ambitious types of rock music.
As Decider explains: “It never ends, Jeff Buckley contextualizes the intermittent nature of the singer’s career. His talent, although enormous, was also unclassifiable by the standards of the 90s music industry. “Here was a guy who could channel Nina Simone and Robert Plant alike, and play guitar like a demon.”
The documentary, which comes from Oscar-nominated director Amy Berg, had access to Buckley’s diaries and often appears as animations. The docufilm also features interviews with key people in Buckley’s life, offering a highly detailed and often unflinching portrait of an unusual man with an unusual talent.
At the time of this publication, it has ratings of 98% and 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively, among critics and fans. So if you’re in the mood to watch one of the new HBO Max movies this month that isn’t a traditional movie, I suggest you stick with this one.
