The Department of Meteorology of Pakistan (PMD) has issued a heat wave alert, predicting a strong increase in temperatures throughout the country from April 13, because a high pressure system develops in the upper atmosphere.
The southern regions, including Sindh, Southern Punjab and Baluchistan, are expected to experience serious heat wave conditions from April 14, and daytime temperatures will probably rise 6-8 ° C above normal until April 18.
In the north and central parts of the country, including Islamabad, Punjab Superior and Central, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltist and Azad Kashmir, the temperatures are expected to increase by 4-6 ° C above normal. Night temperatures are also forecast to remain unusually high during the same period.
Excessive heat could trigger dust and wind storms, which raises risks to infrastructure such as electrical posts, trees, vehicles and solar panels.
The authorities have urged the public, especially children, women and the elderly, to avoid exposure to the sun and stay hydrated. Farmers are advised to adjust crop management practices, especially wheat collection, and guarantee cattle protection.
The MET Office also warned that growing temperatures can accelerate thaw in the northern regions, increasing the risk of floods between April 14 and 18. The relevant departments have been put on maximum alert to monitor conditions and take preventive measures.
