- Two Hitman The developers have discussed how the team chose some of the locations that appear in the franchise.
- Each location “will usually have a special event”
- The developers also wanted to reflect different types of spy fantasy.
In a recent interview with TechRadar Gaming, two Hitman The developers discussed how they chose some of the global locations that appeared as levels in the series.
“It always starts with ‘wouldn’t it be cool if 47 went somewhere?’ If you step back and look at the different locations and what’s happening, […] “We usually have a special event there,” explained Jacob Mikkelsen, Legend level designer at series developer IO Interactive.
He went on to point out the first major level of 2016. Hitman as an example. “In the case of Paris, Michael the writer had this situation where we have a Russian oligarch who owns a fashion company, and then his accomplice is selling these spy secrets in a secret auction that’s going on at the same time under the cover of the fashion show.”
“I talked to Martin, the art director at the time, about where all this should take place and then he said, ‘I think it should be a palace in Paris,’ and I said, ‘Okay, great, but they’re a little big, right?’ “And that was like ‘I need a patio for the fashion show,’ so I went looking for locations in Paris on Google Maps,” she continued.
“I found the different palaces they have in Paris, and I ended up at the Luxembourg Palace and chose [to base the map on] “That one, because of the shape of the building, allows for ledges around it, so that would actually work really well to provide agility throughout the building on the outside.”
According to Christian Elverdam, creative director and director of multiple Hitman In the titles, the central question is always “what is the most complex social event we could imagine at that moment?”
The next question then is “how can 47 have a costume that makes him part of that? You know, being on stage.” Then, of course, it’s “what’s the biggest chandelier you’ve smashed on someone?”
Jack of all trades
Elverdam also explained that a lot of attention was paid to fulfilling different types of spy fantasies in each level.
“In Paris, MI6 contacted Diana to get a list of NOC agents to stop this auction of secrets. It’s basically what James Bond would be doing if he were in the universe,” he said.
“We were flirting with the agent fantasy. Then we wanted Sapienza to feel a little more like a Mission Impossible plot, with this specific DNA virus. I will say it’s funny that it then became the plot of No Time to Die. […] but that was actually something that we felt could be in a Mission: Impossible movie. “We wanted Marrakesh to have some of those gritty new vibes, like Jason Bourne.”
These ideas were combined with the different locations that the developers wanted to include as “a marriage,” he argued. “It’s pretty organic.”
