- Instagram’s new Restyle feature uses Meta AI to edit images and videos for Stories
- You can add, remove or change any element of the uploaded media.
- There are preset options or you can use your own prompts
Meta has launched a new Instagram editing feature in Stories called Restyle, powered by Meta AI, that lets you add, delete, or change images and videos to match a vision of your imagination (or just delete a photobomb). The tool is rolling out in the US, although the video editing option is less available than the stills feature.
All you have to do is add a photo or video to your Story, tap the Restyle icon, and transform your post. The importance of this release goes beyond more fun filters; could be an important entry point for new users of AI tools who wouldn’t bother with a one-off app but would share media regularly on Instagram.
How to use Restyle
This is how Restyle is actually used. Open Instagram and tap the further Sign in to your profile photo to start uploading a story. Choose your photo or video from your camera roll and upload it. In the Story editor, look for the brush style. Remodel icon at the top right. Then choose if you want Add, Eliminateeither Change something, or select one of the preset styles.
After choosing a style or typing your choice, simply press Made and in a few seconds you will see the result. You can redo it by pressing the reload icon for a slightly different shot, or by tapping Undo if you want to go back to the previous version of the image. Once you’re ready, tap Madeand you can upload the History.
There is also an option Add yours sticker if you want your friends to join the trend and share your story.
For videos, the process is similar, but you’ll see preset effects to choose from, such as Submarine, Snowfalleither Fire and flames.
As an example, I took a beautiful portrait of my dog wearing a bandana and uploaded it. So I used Remodel to “Remove the bandana,” followed by a request to “Add a superhero costume.”
Meta AI decided that I was literally referring to the most famous superhero in the world. It is clear that intellectual property regulations are not the first priority for AI in its production. Still, as wonderful as it looked, I didn’t want my dog’s other identity to be Captain Copyright Infringement, so I used Restyle to “Change the superhero emblem to something related to space and dogs.”
I was much happier with that image, so I then asked. Remodel for “Change the background to the roof of a skyscraper.” You can see the result above.
Comic AI
I then resorted to the preset options to Remodel and I chose the sketch option. I wasn’t very impressed, so I used Remodel “Change it to be more comic-like,” which was better, then asked the AI to “add details from a comic called ‘Cosmic Canine.'” It’s not exactly Jack Kirby, but if you just wait a few seconds, it’s pretty impressive.
Instagram has competition for AI photo editing tools, making Restyle necessary to keep up both in terms of AI and social media. Google Photos can edit with text prompts, and xAI is aggressively pushing Grok tools in X. And Meta itself has used AI tools in its standalone Meta AI app. But embed Remodel directly in Stories generates a much larger number of people who could at least be trying it.
He Add yours The stickers with their redesigned image are clearly intended to make these AI-enhanced images and the tools behind them go viral.
Of course, because the tool uses your uploaded photo or video plus text prompts, you rely on Meta’s model to match your vision, and any AI tool will sometimes be glitchy or simply copy existing trademarks. Still, while the results don’t come anywhere close to human-made illustrations or videos in terms of artistic merit, you’ll likely see plenty of people try at least the pre-made options, if only to see what they or their dog look like as a royalty-free felt figure.
