It is a repeat of the last T20 World Cup final when India takes on South Africa in their first Super 8 clash. Both teams go in unbeaten and have rarely turned the ball over except in the match between South Africa and Afghanistan, which went into a second Super Over.
Even as hosts, India will not have the home field advantage as South Africa have played three of their four group matches on the flat Ahmedabad ground, which has an average first innings score of 192 so far in this tournament, meaning we can expect a high-scoring encounter.
Speaking of which, India’s batting approach in their game against Netherlands came under a bit of scrutiny, especially since Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav failed to generate any heat while batting first. That has to change if India is to challenge South Africa’s hard-hitting lineup, with most of their batsmen showing good form.
One of the things to watch out for in this match will be South Africa’s plans against India’s opener. While Ishan Kishan has fantastic touch, Abhishek Sharma has scored three ducks in three matches and has struggled against right-arm spin. Therefore, there is a big chance that Aiden Markram can open the bowling, just like Aryan Dutt did for Netherlands and Salman Agha did for Pakistan against India.
India will also have to think carefully about its mix. The decision on whether to play Washington Sundar will be interesting. Ultimately, it could be a head-to-head between him and left-arm bowler Axar Patel, especially considering South Africa’s mix of right-handers and left-handers.
