New Zealand have reached the quarter-finals in three of the last four T20 World Cups, and could make it four out of five at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Friday. In the last round of the Super 8 phase they will face England, who have already secured a place in the semi-finals.
The Black Caps had their first Super 8 match (a match against Pakistan) rained out, but made up some ground by bowling out co-hosts Sri Lanka, Mitchell Santner making 47 and Rachin Ravindra scoring four for 27 in a 61-run walk. This left them two points better than the Shaheens, with a much higher NRR as well.
For Pakistan to have any chance of progressing, they need England to beat New Zealand. Former Black Caps captain Tim Southee, now England bowling coach, should certainly be able to help in that regard.
England have been somewhat chaotic with the bat, being forced to go deep in almost all their matches. It was the case once again in the thrilling two-wicket victory over Pakistan, Harry Brook’s century at No 3 coming close to covering up another late collapse.
