That’s exactly what the NBA Cup was created for. Two success-hungry franchises meet in the finals of the season tournament at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Tuesday: the San Antonio Spurs led by returning megastar Victor Wembanyama and Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns showing exactly why the New York Knicks have installed themselves as the Eastern Conference favorites.
What was lost in the euphoria of the 7-foot-4 center’s triumphant return over the weekend was that moments like these can be extremely rare, given his injury history. Wembanyama returned after 12 games out of the game he starring role in the team’s outstanding performance of the season, but his availability can never be taken for granted, especially on big occasions.
SGA and the Thunder had been on a 16-game rampage and No. 17 looked like a certainty before the Wemby unveiling. Although Devin Vassell led the scoring charts with 23 points, and Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox each scored 22 – and all deserve a lot of credit for keeping San Antonio on track during Wembanyama’s latest extended absence – the Frenchman’s 22 points, nine rebounds and two blocks completely changed the game.
Brunson has arguably been the NBA’s all-time player and is on fire right now. He scored a season-high 40 points to help the Knicks defeat the Magic, and has now dropped at least 30 in four straight games, and four straight NBA Cup games. Despite trailing the Pistons in the Eastern Conference standings, a dizzying streak of nine wins in 10 has put the league on alert. However, three-point shooting has been the foundation of their success, and the Spurs held the Thunder to a season-low 41.3% from the field.
