- The next camera in the series M of Leica could be the first to have an evf
- It could be the most small, lighter and more versatile Leica camera so far
- The Leica Photos application refers to ‘M11-V’
Leica seems to be on the verge of launching a new model in the legendary M Series, but it is likely that the news will be with the dismay of some staunch fans. Because? Well, it seems that the M11-V will be the first M series to leave the iconic optical television station, replacing it with an electronic viewfinder (EVF).
The news is courtesy of Leica Rumores, which indicates that the latest beta version of the application photos of Leica contains references to an M11-V model. That suggests that an official announcement is imminent, perhaps as soon as some time in the coming weeks. In the past, Leica Rumors has published filtered images that seem to show an M series camera with a large rear touch screen, a clean upper plaque, without ISO dial and an EVF. It also seems to be something smaller than the previous models of the M series.
Leica, of course, has produced many cameras with EVF in the past, such as its premium compact Q3 and Q3 43 and its series of cameras without mirror L-Montor, the last of which, Leica SL3-S, Techradar reviewed only recently. But, until now, the M series has remained firmly only from the telemeter.
Home in the range?
The telemeters offer a unique photographic experience, encouraging the user to participate more fully with the theme through the manual approach to divided image, and this experience is a large part of what makes the cameras of the Leica M system so loved.
The act of composing and taking a picture in a camera of the M series is nothing more that has experienced in photography, and is the only thread that goes back to the first analog cameras of the M series that emerged in the 1950s.
Replacing the telemeter with an EVF will undoubtedly rationalize the entire process of shooting in an M camera (although I suspect that the M11-V will continue to be a manual approach), but I also believe that the risk of eliminating one of the key reasons to choose one on any other body without full frame of the canon, Sony, Fujifilm or Panasonic.
I am not a fan of the red point, I think the M series is located apart from the ‘normal’ digital cameras, and everything is due to the telemeter.
There are other reasons why people adore the M series, such as the excellent range of first -class M assembly focus lenses, timeless design and impeccable construction quality. It is not likely that the M11-V interferes with any of those aspects, but a series M that feels more like a ‘standard’ mirror camera will undoubtedly be a controversial beast.
Even so, despite my own reservations, I cannot avoid thinking about the possibilities that could come when combining those lenses with a small and light M series.
