Welcome to another In Case You Missed It (ICYMI) recap, which we do every week to make sure you’re up to speed on all the big stories that have emerged in the world of technology over the past seven days.
It’s been a great week this week, as it is every week, and we’ve seen a major update for ChatGPT, a new retro film camera from Kodak, an update on DJI’s US ban, a teaser on Garmin’s ‘future of wearables’, and more.
7. Kodak gave us a gloriously retro 35mm film camera
Say hello to the Snapic A1, a new 35mm film camera from Kodak that offers multiple exposure shooting, a 25mm three-element glass lens, a maximum aperture of f/9.5, and manual focus, all wrapped in a plastic frame with a retro aesthetic.
The camera weighs just 117 grams, comes in two colors (Rhino Gray and Ivory White) and costs $99 (that’s about £75 / AU$150), with a neck strap and case included. Given the sample photos provided, we’re also cautiously optimistic about performance.
6. Garmin previewed the “future of wearable devices”
What is Garmin working on? One of the company’s official social media pages posted and then showed a teaser of a new device, promising the “future of wearables,” and there has been a lot of speculation online about what the teaser could refer to.
Based on the brief glimpse we get in the teaser image, it looks like the next device could be a slim smartwatch rather than the Whoop competitor Garmin is rumored to be working on, but we won’t know for sure until Garmin makes it official.
5. ChatGPT got a voice mode update
The voice mode within ChatGPT now works much better with the text mode, so you can switch between them more easily. We already took the new interface for a spin and were impressed by how much it improves the user experience of the AI robot.
We’ve got all the details you need to know about the newly revised and improved Voice Mode, including how to go back to the old interface and exactly what the differences are if you’re signed up for one of the ChatGPT subscription plans, compared to free users.
4. Insta360’s all-seeing drone has a release date
Insta360 has a new 360-degree drone called the Antigravity A1, which should offer spectacular views in flight and some fantastic photos and videos afterwards. The drone was actually announced back in August, but now we also have an on-sale date.
You’ll be able to order the Antigravity A1 on Thursday December 4th and it will be available worldwide, so you should be able to get your hands on one. Meanwhile, DJI is strongly rumored to be working on its own 360-degree drone device.
3. OpenAI’s first device came one step closer to reality
It’s no longer a secret that OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, in partnership with former Apple design chief Jony Ive, are working on a device that will allow you to carry ChatGPT with you at all times, but we’re still waiting to find out what it looks like and how much it will cost.
Those questions remain unanswered, but we know that the device is getting closer to launch. Altman has now gone on record saying that the device should feel like a “lake cabin” compared to an iPhone (whatever that means) and will be released in the next few years.
2. DJI warned us about its imminent ban in the US.
Time is quickly running out for DJI to prevent new products from being banned in the US, not because some security audit has found them to be a threat to US national security, but because no security audit has been conducted, and the December 23 deadline is fast approaching.
DJI has released a full update on the current situation of its users and is asking them for help to avoid a ban. Find out what the ban will mean for DJI if it eventually goes into effect, and what will happen to products you’ve already purchased after that date.
