IHC grade case bench supports dissolved

ISLAMABAD:

The newly constituted bench of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), which was supposed to resume hearing a plea accusing IHC judge Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri of having a dubious LLB degree, was also dissolved.

On September 16, a division bench, comprising Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Azam Khan, restrained Justice Jahangiri from discharging his duties while issuing notices on the petition filed by advocate Mian Dawood.

Subsequently, the IHC judge and several of his colleagues filed a petition before the Supreme Court, which on September 30 quashed the division bench’s interim order.

Meanwhile, the court was reconstituted and Justice Khadim Hussian Soomro replaced Justice Muhammad Azam Khan. On Tuesday, the court was supposed to hear a petition filed by the Islamabad District Bar Association to become a party in the case.

However, when the court resumed hearing the case, Justice Soomro recused himself citing personal reasons. This led to the dissolution of the court which will now be reconstituted at the next hearing.

Last year, the Karachi University union canceled the title of IHC judge. On September 25, after the IHC prevented the judge from exercising his duties, the university also issued a notice confirming its union’s decision.

The university registrar claimed that Tariq Mahmood, son of Qazi Muhammad Akram, had been found guilty of using unfair means in the late 1980s.

“[He] he was barred for three years from entering any university/college and from appearing for any university degree examination under Disqualification Circular No 88 of 1989 and was never a student of Islamia Law College Karachi.

“Pursuant to the union meeting held on August 31, 2024 through Resolution No 06, the LLB results and degree of Tariq Mehmood with post No 22857, registration No AIL-7124/87 is hereby withdrawn and cancelled,” it added.

However, the Sindh High Court stayed the notification of Karachi University on October 3.
