IHC restores Haeezur Rehman as president of the PTA


On Thursday Rehman of Haeezur Rehman, the Superior Court of Islamabad (IHC) restored on Thursday General (RETD) Hafeezur Rehman as president of the Telecommunications Authority of Pakistan (PTA), suspending an previous verdict that had ordered his immediate removal.

An IHC division bank put aside the decision of the single bank of Judge Babar Sattar, who had declared the appointment of legally defective Rehman and directed his dismissal.

The decision of unique banking, issued only one day before, had argued that the appointment process did not meet the legal requirements and could not be confirmed.

Judge Sattar’s detailed verdict covers 99 pages and had proposed that a member of the senior PTA serves as an interim president until a permanent and legally valid appointment is made.

Rehman had challenged IHC’s decision after the unique banking decision. The original petition was presented by the Digital Rights activist Usama Khilji through the lawyer Asad Ladha, disputing the appointment of Rehman under the 1972 ordinance.

Rehman argued that he was first appointed as a member (administration) on May 24, 2023 and promoted to President the next day. After the challenge, he presented an Intra-Court appeal.

After listening to arguments, the Division Bank suspended the order of a single bank and restored Rehman to his position, allowing him to continue as head of the telecommunications regulator.
