- The IKEA Gåtebo is a microwave, fryer and grill in one
- It costs $199 / £150 / $299, which is much less than most combination cookers.
- Combined with the Tillreda compact induction cooktop, it could replace your oven
IKEA’s three-in-one Gåtebo microwave has proven incredibly popular since its launch in Europe last year, and is now available worldwide for just $199 / £150 / $299. It’s no bigger than a regular freestanding microwave and has so many cooking functions that it could easily replace a regular oven in a small home.
Imagine what you could do with all that extra space. You could install a dishwasher if you don’t already have one (one of the best kitchen appliances ever created), have under-counter bins for sorting trash and recycling, install a full-size water softener, or just have an extra cabinet for all your oils and spices.
Microwave and air fryer combinations are not a totally new concept and are a great option if you have resisted purchasing an air fryer due to lack of space. Even the compact Ninja Double Stack still takes up a footprint of 11 x 18.5 inches / 28 cm x 47 cm, which is substantial when you’re already dealing with a tight workspace.
The Gåtebo’s cooking options include microwave, grill, air fry, defrost, tea/coffee warming and two combination cooking modes (microwave and grill, and microwave and convection). Not sure where to start? The manual provides detailed instructions for favorites such as French fries, potato wedges, chicken wings, and nuggets.
But what about rice and pasta? Well, getting rid of your regular oven doesn’t have to mean losing your stove. IKEA has a wide range of budget induction hobs, including the portable Tillreda, which costs just $74.99 / £45 / AU$49, and can be hung or stored out of sight when you’re not making dinner.
The Gåtebo is also remarkably cheap. For comparison, our current best-quality microwave and air fryer combo is Samsung’s Combi Smart Microwave Oven, which costs more than twice as much: £329 (around $440 / AU$660).
I have yet to get my hands on the Gåtebo to test its cooking powers for myself, but I hope to review it soon and see if it deserves a spot in our full roundup of the best air fryers. Who knows, it might even dethrone the Samsung Combi.
