Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan was on Tuesday shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) in Islamabad for a scheduled follow-up visit related to the treatment of his right eye.

The PTI founder was shifted for the second time under tight security to Pims hospital from Adiala jail for treatment of his affected eye after his first visit on January 24 and 25. The doctors had prescribed three injections to care for his eye.

He was transferred back to the prison after staying in the hospital for almost an hour, where his heart condition was also checked, along with an eye exam. He will reportedly receive the third injection on March 23.

Before the procedure, a committee of specialists performed a detailed examination of your eye. A consultant cardiologist also performed echocardiography and electrocardiogram. Both tests showed normal heart function, according to a statement issued by the hospital’s CEO.

Officials confirmed that informed consent was obtained prior to treatment. The procedure was carried out under the supervision of consultant ophthalmologists and a consultant vitreoretinal surgeon from Pims and Shifa International Eye Hospital.

Following preliminary evaluations, the former prime minister was administered a second dose of an anti-VEGF intravitreal injection as part of ongoing care for the eye condition he was diagnosed with, the hospital said in the statement.

The injection was administered in an operating room under established medical protocols and precautionary measures.

The intervention was performed as day surgery, allowing discharge later that same day. Hospital authorities stated that his vital signs remained stable throughout his stay, during the procedure and in the recovery period.

He was subsequently discharged with follow-up advice, necessary instructions and relevant medical documentation.

SC report

Imran’s health has become the latest point of contention between the government and the opposition comprising the PTI and the TTAP alliance after a report submitted to the Supreme Court by his lawyer and amicus curiae Barrister Salman Safdar of the SC.

The report revealed that the PTI founder was diagnosed with a serious eye condition known as central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO).

CRVO is a disorder that commonly affects older adults and is linked to underlying cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease.

In addition, the report states that the former prime minister, who has been in prison since August 2023, complains of having lost 85% of vision in his right eye.

Imprisoned since August 2023

Imran, 73, has been imprisoned since August 2023 following convictions that he and his PTI consider politically motivated.

Since his ouster in 2022 via a no-confidence vote, he has faced multiple cases, including state gifts and an illegal marriage.

Some sentences have been suspended or overturned and appeals are pending. He denies any wrongdoing.

The PTI came to power in 2018 and retains a large support base in key provinces.

For four days, PTI supporters have blocked major roads linking KP with Punjab, stranding thousands of vehicles and affecting fuel and food supplies in some areas.
