Indian bodybuilder Varinder Singh Ghuman dies at 42

Famed Indian bodybuilder Varinder Singh Ghuman died earlier this week at age 42 after suffering cardiac arrest during surgery.

Indian newspaper The Tribune said Ghuman tore a muscle in his chest, leading to his hospitalization at Fortis Hospital in Amritsar.

Other Indian media, via People, reported that Ghuman had been dealing with shoulder pain before being admitted to the hospital.

The bodybuilder was named Mr. India in 2009 and took second place in Mr. Asia that same year. He was hired by Arnold Schwarzenegger to promote his health products in Asia and was the first Indian to receive a professional card from the International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB).

Ghuman appeared in four films, including “Tiger 3,” which grossed 466 million rupees, or approximately $52 million, at the box office. He also competed in the Arnold Classic.

“Hearing the news of the sudden demise of famous Punjabi bodybuilder and actor Virender Singh Ghuman ji made my heart very sad,” senior Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said in X, via translation. “With his hard work, discipline and ability, he illuminated the name of Punjab throughout the world. May Waheguru ji grant his soul an eternal abode at His feet and give strength to the family to bear this painful blow.”

At one point, Ghuman, who was 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighed 287 pounds.
