The Indian authorities have arrested an outstanding academic in a social media post that criticized the discriminatory policies of the Bharatiya Janata (BJP) party against Muslims and raised questions about the recent reports on the military operation of India against Pakistan.
The development follows a military confrontation between Pakistan and India about the accusations of New Delhi against Islamabad about a deadly attack in the Pahalgam of Jammu and Kashmir (Iiojk) of Kashmir.
Ali Khan Mahmudabad, associate professor at Ashoka University of Haryana, was arrested Sunday in New Delhi, according to local media. His arrest occurred more than a week after Pakistan and India, both nations with nuclear weapons, agreed to stop the fire.
Police said that Mahmudabad, 42, was reserved under sections of the Criminal Code related to harmful acts to maintain community harmony, incitement to armed rebellion or subversive activities and insults of religious beliefs.
The case was recorded after a Yogesh Jatheri complaint, general secretary of the BJP youth wing in Haryana, as reported by Indian Media.
In a publication on social networks on May 8, Mahmudabad, head of the Department of Political Sciences of the University, highlighted the apparent irony of the Hindutva -right commentators by praising Colonel Sofía Qureshi, who had approached the media information sessions.
He wrote: “Perhaps they could also demand aloud that the victims of the Linchan mafia, arbitrary bulldosis and others who are victims of the traffic of the hatred of the BJP are protected as Indian citizens.
“The optics of two women soldiers who present their findings is important [sic] But the optics must translate to reality in the opposite is only hypocrisy, “Mahmudabad said.
“The basic reality faced by common Muslims is different from what the government tried to show, but at the same time the press conference shows that an Indian, united in its diversity, is not completely dead as an idea,” he added.
The Haryana State Commission for Women had summoned the teacher, so he said it was a derogatory comment against official women and an attempt to incite community discord.
Defending its publication in X, Mahmudabad said that his comments were misunderstood and that his intention was to ask for the protection of soldiers and civilians. He rejected the accusations of misogyny, calling accusations without foundation.
In February of last year, Amnesty International urged the Indian government to stop the “unfair demolition of Muslim properties.”
“The illegal demolition of Muslim properties by the Indian authorities, sold as ‘justice of excavators’ by political leaders and media, is cruel and frightening. Such displacement and unfair is deeply unfair, illegal and discriminatory. They are destroying families, and must stop immediately,” said Agnes Callamard, general secretary of Amnesty.
“The authorities have repeatedly undermined the rule of law, destroying homes, companies or places of worship, through specific hatred campaigns, harassment, violence and the weapon of JCB excavators. These human rights abuses must be approached urgently,” he said.
Separately, Vlogger of Travel Jyoti Malhotra along with another five of Punjab and Haryana were also arrested for alleged espionage for Pakistan, according to the Indian media.
The Hindus of extreme right in India were involved in Muslim Linchar and tried to monitor interreligious relationships. The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has spoken against the murders of cow guards, but his government has done little to stop the activities of the vigilant groups.
