Pakistan’s Indus Waters Commissioner Mehar Ali Shah on Sunday rejected India’s claim to leave the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) “on hold”, saying the treaty remains fully valid under international law.

He expressed these opinions during a program on a private television channel.

“As far as keeping the treaty in suspense is concerned, the word ‘suspension’ is not recognized under international treaty law. It is a coined term, because we believe India understands that it cannot suspend, violate or terminate the treaty,” he said.

He warned that India’s current refusal to cooperate within the rules-based framework was “alarming”.
