- Nintendo Switch 2 is likely to be a big hit
- DFC Intelligence claims there is only room for one Nintendo competitor in the next generation of consoles
- It is not clear if it will be Sony or Microsoft.
With the Nintendo Switch 2 getting closer and closer, everyone is wondering if Sony or Microsoft will be the Japanese giant’s biggest competitor in the next generation of consoles.
According to industry analysts at market research firm DFC Intelligence, it’s still too early to say whether Sony’s hardware currently has a “slight advantage” thanks to its large following and attractive IP portfolio.
The information comes from the firm’s recent 2024 Video Game Market Report and Forecast, which details the trajectory of the gaming industry over the past year and predicts where it could go next. Importantly, the report does not consider the mobile gaming market, which is estimated to generate revenue of approximately $75 billion.
The report suggests that we are on the cusp of record growth in the rest of the gaming industry, driven largely by the launch of “two of the biggest products in history”: Nintendo Switch 2 and grand theft car 6. According to the report, Nintendo Switch 2 could have “significantly stronger launch sales” than its predecessor, although it will be difficult to surpass Nintendo Switch’s record 27 million sales in 2020.
He goes on to question which company will be Nintendo’s biggest competitor, suggesting that “only one system is likely to be successful” besides the Nintendo Switch 2. Both Sony and Microsoft are expected to release new consoles between 2026 and 2028.
The company says it’s “too early to tell which other system will be successful,” though it says Sony has a “slight advantage” thanks to its “loyal base and strong Sony intellectual property.”
That said, Microsoft is said to still be in a strong position thanks to its status as a software publisher. It may have “failed” with the Xbox Series hardware. .
