- iPhone 17e reportedly landing ‘imminently’
- It’s also said to stick with its predecessor’s $599 starting price.
- However, apart from a new chipset and MagSafe, it may not have many updates.
There could be good and bad news for Apple’s next mid-range model, as the latest leak suggests that it will arrive very soon and without a price increase, but also with few updates.
According to Apple watcher Mark Gurman, writing for Bloomberg (via Apple Insider), the iPhone 17e will land “imminently,” which could mean within the next few days, although we’ve previously heard that it could launch on February 19, which is a little further away but could still be considered imminent, depending on your perspective.
The best news is that it will apparently start at $599 in the US, meaning there will be no price increase there, at least for the base model. If the iPhone 16e price applies elsewhere as well, you can expect a starting price of £599 / AU$999 in the UK and Australia.
Just an improvement
But Gurman also claims that this phone won’t see too many changes from its predecessor, and the main updates will simply be an A19 chipset (compared to an A18) and MagSafe support.
Such modest updates would go some way to explaining how Apple was able to maintain last year’s price, even in the face of rising RAM prices. And Gurman is a highly reputable source, so this information is likely accurate.
If so, even with its limited upgrades, the iPhone 17e has a chance of being one of the most attractive mid-range phones to arrive this year, especially since the Pixel 10a, which will likely be one of its main rivals and also launching soon, is reportedly an even smaller upgrade than its predecessor.
So, given that big-name alternatives to the iPhone 17e may cost more or offer less, Apple could find itself in a good position with this next phone, even if it doesn’t sound remotely exciting.
