- Microsoft has announced that “something big is coming” tomorrow
- Whatever Windows 11 features, it will give your hands a rest
- It’s a clear hint about typing less and voice commands seem most likely.
Microsoft is teasing a big reveal for Windows 11 tomorrow, and it apparently has to do with ditching the keyboard, or at least using that peripheral less.
Windows Central noted that the official Windows on

Clearly this refers to typing, and in response to someone who posted that they like using their keyboard, the Windows account said: “Don’t worry, no keyboard was damaged.”
This makes more sense when viewed through the lens of comments a couple of Microsoft executives have recently made about how we interact with Windows 11.
First, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of operating system security, David Weston, noted that in the future of Windows, “the world of mouse-over and typing will feel as foreign as it does for Generation Z to use MS-DOS,” and that voice commands and talking to the PC will become more important.
Then Pavan Davuluri, vice president of Windows and Devices at Microsoft, told us: “You’ll be able to talk to your computer while you write, ink, or interact with another person. You should be able to make a computer semantically understand your intention to interact with it.”
Analysis: An election by voice
So those comments about voice input being more important for Windows 11, along with this new reference to typing less frequently, is surely an indication that Microsoft is going to reveal something big in this regard.
Beyond Windows 11’s Voice Access feature, Microsoft has brought voice dictation to Word and, I might add, it works very well – this is an improved version of Dragon’s speech-to-text technology (which I’ve used a lot in the past and which impressed me even back then).
Some additional steps have also been taken with voice commands on Copilot+ PCs, and given that, this makes me wonder to what extent these potential new voice powers could be tied to AI, and perhaps require an NPU for responsive processing on the device.
Time will tell, but fortunately we don’t have to wait long; I’m certainly looking forward to seeing what Microsoft is cooking up here.
