Islamabad welcomes Baku-Yerevan Deal

Islamabad:

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the president of Azerbaiyani, Ilham Aliyev on Sunday, for the historic peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, welcoming development as a point of historical inflection for the southern Caucasus and a gateway to regional prosperity.

The prime minister received a phone call from President Aliyev in which the two leaders discussed the peace agreement, bilateral relations and regional connectivity perspectives, said his office in an official brochure.

During the “warm and cordial” conversation, Shehbaz praised Aliyev’s “visionary role” at the end of the decades about Nagorno-Karabakh, describing him as “a mutually beneficial ending for one of the most intractable disputes in the region.”

He said the peace agreement “would mark the beginning of a new era of stability and economic opportunities for the Caucasus.” The prime minister also praised the role of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, by facilitating the agreement.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have fought for bitter wars on Nagorno-Karabakh, a mountainous region of Azerbaijan, first in the early 1990s after the collapse of the former Soviet Union and again in 2020. Azerbaiyan recovered territory in a rapid offensive 24 hours a day in September 2023.

This caused new diplomatic efforts to ensure lasting peace. The negotiated agreement in the United States aims to normalize ties between the two countries, raiding the way for expanded trade, transport and energy cooperation after decades of hostility.

Aliyev expressed a deep gratitude for the “long data and constant” support from Pakistan to Azerbaijan’s position on the Nagorno-Karabakh theme. “It has always been a duty for the people of Pakistan to extend their support to their Azerbaiy brothers and sisters,” said Shehbaz.

Aliyev emphasized that a stable South Caucasus could become a connectivity center that links Pakistan with Central Asia, which offers new ways for trade and cooperation. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the “positive trajectory” of bilateral relations, particularly in trade and investment.

Remembering his recent meetings in Lachin and Khankendi, Shehbaz reiterated his invitation to President Aliyev to make an official visit to Pakistan. The two leaders are also expected to meet outside the next summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Tianjin.

In a publication about X after the conversation, Shehbaz wrote: “I transmitted happy happily to him and the people of Azerbaijan in the historic Peace Agreement of Armenia Azerbaijan … We also reviewed the trajectory of bilateral relations and reaffirm our commitment to continue with this positive moment.”

He said that Pakistan hoped to continue with high -level commitments with Azerbaijan in the next few days.
