The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has initiated plans to introduce an electric tram system in Islamabad as part of broader efforts to modernize and ecologize the public transport infrastructure of the city.

The president of the CDA, Mohammad Ali Randhawa, confirmed the development after a meeting with officials of the National Telecommunications Radio Corporation (NRTC) on Thursday.

He said the authority has approved a feasibility study for the electric tram project, in line with the directives of the Prime Minister and the Minister of the Interior.

“Electric buses are already operational. Now we are moving towards electric trams,” Randhawa said. “A feasibility study will help us to take the next step.”

According to a press release from CDA, the meeting focused on the operation of the electrical trams of the soft wheel and improving the existing power supply network.

Randhawa ordered the relevant departments to end the study to allow the tram service to run along Islamabad’s most busy corridors.

The sources said that a Chinese consulting firm is likely to be incorporated to carry out the study. Initially, four routes are being considered, including one from Rawat to the Faisal Mosque through the highway, and another from Jinnah Square to Islamabad International Airport through Srinagar Highway.
