- Amazon has just reached a $ 2.5 billion agreement with the Federal Commerce Commission (FTC)
- Of the total sum, $ 1.5 billion will cover customer reimbursements
- Many Prime Amazon users can be eligible for reimbursement, but there are some warnings
Amazon recently decided to settle in his large case against the FTC (Federal Commerce Commission), agreeing a mass payment of $ 2.5 billion instead of making a trial.
The accusations against Amazon included that the company made it difficult to cancel the main subscriptions and that it registered people in a subscription without the completely informed consent. Amazon did not admit irregularities in the case, but decided to liquidate instead of facing years of appeals.
Here is everything you need to know to find out if you qualify for a refund and how to claim it if you do.
What happened to the Amazon Prime settlement?
The complaint specified that Amazon had used “dark patterns” to deceive people to register or renew their main subscriptions. In addition, the FTC said that canceling a main subscription was too complicated, with too many obstacles along the way.
Amazon denies any irregularity, but has agreed to review how Prime is presented and canceled. In statementA company spokesman said: “Amazon and our executives have always followed the law, and this agreement allows us to advance and focus on innovating for customers.”
FTC ensures a historical agreement of $ 2.5 billion against Amazon. The agency alleged that Amazon used deceptive methods to register consumers for main subscriptions and made it extremely difficult to cancel: https://t.co/c6e1tpigdiSeptember 25, 2025
How big is Amazon Prime refund? The agreement reserves $ 1.5 billion specifically for consumer refunds, but, of course, the real sum that a person can obtain is limited.
The FTC estimates that millions of Amazon Prime users could be eligible, so the payment amount will be limited to up to $ 51 per person. This figure is based on the refund group that is distributed in all approved claims, so not all users will necessarily receive the maximum amount.
Who will qualify for Amazon Prime refund?
To qualify for Amazon Prime refund, it must have been registered for the service between June 23, 2019 and June 23, 2025.
If you tried to cancel Prime during that period of time but did not end up doing it, it also qualifies. Trying to cancel was defined as starting the process, but without completing it, or feeling tempted to remain signed. The agreement only applies to customers in the United States.
How is it verified when registered for Prime? Go to the Amazon application (or the website) and go to Account> Memberships and SubscriptionsThen touch ‘Payment history’. You can move down to see your main payment history.
How will reimbursements be processed?
Whether you get your refund automatically or not, it depends on the group of clients it belongs.
The first group, eligible for automatic payment, includes Amazon Prime subscribers that registered through a “challenged registration flow.” In other words, a process that made it difficult to cancel its subscription. This refers to any version of:
- Universal Prime’s decision page
- The shipping option select page
- The main video registration flow
- Single page payment
Eligible customers may not have used more than three main benefits during the course of their subscription. This means benefits that I would not have received otherwise without being a main member, and presumably includes the main video transmission or free shipping.
If it is part of that first wave of payments, you do not need to file a claim. Amazon will distribute payments according to the total amount of membership rates paid during subscription (a maximum of $ 51), and you can expect to obtain your payment within 90 days.
The second group of clients must request reimbursements. To qualify, it must have been registered through a challenged registration flow (as described above) or tried without success to cancel your subscription. Nor can any of its main benefits have used more than 10 times during any 12 -month subscription period.
Customers who fall under the criteria for the second wave of payments will have to complete a form.
The Amazon Prime refund process
Currently we are only in the first wave of the process, where automatic refunds will be processed for those who registered through a “challenged registration flow” (see above) and have not used more than three main benefits in a period of 12 months.
Unfortunately, Wave two Claimers will have to wait, since Amazon has not yet sent the refund form or created a website with details about the claim process. It will only be available once Wave One clients receive their payments.
Once the website is live, you can apparently access it from the Amazon website and the Amazon Prime page, according to the FTC.
Within 30 days after Amazon’s configuration, your automatic payments, any person eligible for that second wave will be notified by email (and mail cards). This will tell you how to complete the form, and will have 180 days to do it (from the day of the receipt). The email must contain links to the website where you can file your claim.
You can do this by email, prepaid email for first class or directly on the Amazon Settlement website. It is currently not clear when this second part of the process will begin, but we will update this guide once you do.
