Karachi:
Netflix recently launched the fourth volume of the acclaimed animated anthology series Love, death and robotscreated by David Fincher and Tim Miller. Since 2019, Fincher and Miller have created this elegant universe where the opportunities for first -line animation and the exciting genres flexion stories are in abundance. However, after six years and four volumes, it seems that the series is running out of original ideas.
Outstanding
While volume 4 of Love, death and robots It still offers an absolutely beautiful animation and maintains its diversity in terms of the different visual styles, it is the narrative it suffers.
The first three volumes had great success because they always had some prominent episodes. The series has always been structured to offer some episodes, usually 10 to 15 minutes, which have the stronger history concepts backed by the most impressive animation. These episodes offer a beginning, medium and final of each volume, which is sprinkled with shorter, generally comic experiments.
The first volume, with its 18 episodes, the highest of anyone so far, offered most gems. Episodes like Sonnie’s Edge, Good hunt, The witness and Zima Blue It flew to the audience.
Sonnie’s Edge It was a story of revenge set in the world of underground struggle ‘Beastie’ while Good hunt He explored the link between a change of form and the son of a spirit hunter in a world of industrialization quickly. The witness Follow a woman who flees through the city after testifying a murder while Zima Blue Relatives the trip of the artist Zima and his true identity in a story that leaves your jaw on the floor.
While the second volume of eight episodes saw interesting ideas such as genetic modification in Ice and issues of immortality and loneliness in Snow in the desertwas Jibaro In volume three, which deserves a place in the great episodes of all time of the series. Alberto Mielgo’s masterpiece became a cultural phenomenon due to his hypnotic work of CGI and bright characters and history, all told without words. You could see their influence when tons of fans recreated their own versions of the iconic sequence of ‘Dance of Death’ with all makeup, jewelry and costumes.
The purpose of all this is to say that there are no episodes in the last volume that this level of emotional resonance achieved. This volume consists mainly of filling episodes that were remaked by the ideas of filling of previous seasons.
MINI NIGHT DEAD (Vol. 3) It became Close meetings of the mini friend. The other big thing It serves as a prequel to the vol. 1 Three robots. Micro experiments like Smart appliances, stupid ownersAlthough fun, they are not strong enough to be complete episodes. They are test exercises at best and feel too short to have any substance.
Even I can’t stopA concert of Peppers Red Hot Chilli with animated puppets, directed by Fincher himself, seems disappointing.
This is something that Neill Blomkamp Studios de Avena He also did it in 2021. District 9 The director experimented with his own strange and fascinating world construction and concepts. Love, death and robots Volume 4 faces similar problems to those who Studios de Avena DID: exciting concepts that are halfway almost like teasers to long -lasting movies that never arise.
In love with death and robots
This does not mean that the vol. 4 offers nothing. It offers enough to keep it in operation. There are some great ideas in episodes such as Pink spider, The screams of tyrannosaur, How Zeke obtained religion and Because he can crawl.
The first three of the aforementioned episodes are approaching the firm Love, death and robots chop. Pink spiderlocated in the same universe as Swarm of vol. 3, explore the search for the revenge of a woman afflicted with the help of a furry partner.
The screams of tyrannosaur It offers a career bars fight between genetically modified gladiators on custom servant dinosaurs at a space station on Jupiter. Follow the same tropes of dystopian science fiction where the poor die from the entertainment of the elite until it fails. Despite the repeated narrative and a feeling that perhaps more has been done with history, the construction of the world and the characters make this episode a worthy addition to the series.
How Zeke obtained religion It is absolute chaos, a strong and twisted feverish nightmare comes alive. Works with a structure similar to Kill (Vol. 3) Where a team of armed forces fight against inhuman beasts, he never waited. While that team was at least moody and humorous, the new deployment of forces renounces humor. And taking into account the infernal monstrosity that awaits you in the air, you cannot blame them for not finding the fun situation.
In the same line, we find 400 children Where a band of survivors fights the giant monsters of the giant called ‘Boys’. But in addition to the hilarious image of the giants with a baby face that cause destruction, it does not give you much to go home.
Love, death and robots It also offers a surprise this season with a live action episode. Golgotha in which an aquatic alien breed arrives to the earth. Basically he warns us that we do not kill and torture the aquatic life and maintain the balance of the ecosystem. But the episode itself is not a great prominent. Despite having something important to say, he doesn’t say it with impact and style.
Because he can crawl He had the potential to be a great episode of all time. Located in London in 1757, Satan is here to fight a poet’s cat while wanting to take the poet’s soul. The soul has the shape of a new verse and taking it would allow Satan to govern on the earth. But his cat is not an aggression and will fight at all costs to defend his teacher.
An interesting turn in the idea of agreement to the device that has prevailed in myth, literature and cinema for so long, the episode still feels as if it strives too much to be fun. But there are many things that could have done with this trope ‘selling the soul’, and the creators end up choosing an iteration and pretty vanilla of the idea.
Anyway, although the last volume offers enough dopamine to not get bored, it is not as attractive or innovative as the first volumes. In the front of animation, he still offers images and first category sound. The problem is not with production, but rather the quality of stories. He feels full of vignettes and unfinished ideas, often weak concepts to begin with.
One expects us to get a vol. 5 To recover with some exceptional shots. If manufacturers have to follow the old concepts and develop them, the worlds of Jibaro, Zima Blue and Good hunt Offer many rich aspects and depth to continue during the next seasons.
