The only thing missing in the state of Wordle as a cultural institution was a day dedicated to him, and now we also have it.
Welcome to the day of the force, or on May 6, to be precise. Why today? “Because Wordle uses five letters with six conjectures to find a secret word, we think that May 6 would be the perfect date to celebrate the game that has caused a cheerful daily routine for so many people around the world,” said New York Times, Tracy Bennett.
Okay, that has a selfish sense, and who are we discussing with that logic when most of us are hooked to the daily works of the word game that asks us to discover a five -letter word in six attempts?
If you have any questions about Wordle’s popularity or why you deserve one day, look at these statistics. According to the NYT, to date, to date, 5.3 billion Worddle plays. A huge 2.8 million people use the same start word every day.
Worddle ‘is certainly an institution here, where our Daily Worddle Today column provides some suggestions and then guides it through how we solved it. I hope you don’t read those publications before trying to solve the puzzle on your own, but you do it.
Wordle is also a competitive sport. In my house, my wife and I ended every night completing several puzzles, including Wordle, Connections, Strands and Quordle (the only game that is not NYT).
Wordle is invariably our first stop and, yes, there is a competition to see who can solve it in the least number of attempts. Therefore, it should not surprise that to celebrate this totally invented day, the New York Times introduced Worddle Golf.
This is not another word game (thank God, I can’t assume more). Instead, it is a reimora of Wordle’s standard competition in a golf game format.
As with golf, there are 18 holes … or, er … puzzles. You can play against seven other players (or more if you, I suppose, print more Worddle Golf sheets).
Each game is noted in a similar way to a golf game, which means that you want the lowest score (more blows in golf they raise your score and are generally considered something bad).
The Worddle Golf scoring system breaks down like this:
- 6 points for an assumption in the sixth attempt
- 5 points for a “fogey” or fifth attempt to suppose.
- An assumption in four is “par” and is worth 4 points,
- Three are worth 3 points and are considered a “Birdie”
- 2 conjectures is worth 2 points and a rare “eagle”
- 1 is the miracle of a “hole in one” and is worth 1.
In theory, you can spend most of May playing Worddle Golf, but it does mean that no one should skip one day.
It is a silly game, but probably less difficult and frustrating than 18 holes in a true golf course.
Who knows, if you are a true Fordle Pro, this could be the type of challenge you have been waiting for. Hopefully there is no other “Corr”. That was the word, according to the New York Times, which broke 5.6 million gusts.
