- Razer has new competition, with UGreen launching new Linkstation eGPU dock
- UGreen Linkstation comes with an Oculink port and a built-in 850W power supply
- It costs $325 based on Chinese currency conversion.
As portable experiences have become an integral aspect of gaming thanks to the resurgence of portable gaming PCs and more powerful laptops, eGPUs have become vital for better performance, and a renowned manufacturer has joined the market.
As reported by VideoCardz, UGreen has launched a new Linkstation eGPU dock in China for around $325 (based on a China price conversion), with Oculink and USB 4 ports and, most importantly, a built-in 850W power supply.
This is a big move from UGreen, which is best known for making docks (without eGPU), chargers, and USB hubs, but is now diving into docks designed for GPU connections in portable hardware like portable gaming PCs, mini PCs, or laptops.
While there’s no current indication of a launch in other regions, its price is within the range of Razer’s base Core
The two biggest advantages of the UGreen Linkstation dock are the 850W power supply, along with USB 4 and Oculink connection options, the latter providing connection speeds of 64Gbps.
The Razer Core
The chassis adopts a design similar to that of a desktop PC, with what appears to be a mid-tower case, but with the GPU mounted vertically. It supports graphics cards up to 370mm and the 850W power supply should be enough to power a wide range of GPUs, especially since it’s only for one GPU, not a full PC setup.
Review: The UGreen Linkstation eGPU dock looks great, but I’d still choose the Razer dock
There are many eGPU docks available on the market, both from popular manufacturers and smaller brands, that ship with integrated power supplies. However, the Razer Core X V2, despite not coming with one, still has a big advantage in terms of design.
I’ve mentioned this before, but I prefer not to expose my GPU to potential damage from drops or accidents, and the Core X V2 (as well as the Razer Core This is especially the case if you plan to use your eGPU dock setup with your laptop or gaming notebook in hand, as any accidental pulling on cables could lead to serious damage.
While the UGreen design is better than other eGPU versions, the LinkStation base is still somewhat exposed, and Razer is the only manufacturer I’ve seen so far that builds a full chassis case for desktop GPUs, the same way any desktop PC case would house a GPU.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not ruling out the new UGreen option, but since I luckily have some spare power supplies, the fact that Razer’s Core although I doubt that’s the case for most consumers.
