- WordPress Playground allows you to create completely local and unpublished websites
- Sites are limited to 100MB and are stored locally, per device
- You can still use WordPress plugins
WordPress has announced the launch of my.WordPress.net, a new service that allows the website builder to run entirely within a web browser, meaning you can create a completely private website-style interface without it appearing on the public Internet.
It is built on WordPress Playground, a project that allows WordPress to run locally, so users will not need to choose a hosting provider or register a domain.
Because these new types of sites run locally within the browser’s storage, they will be device-specific and will not be accessible from other devices.

However, if users end up so impressed with their own work that they want to make it public, they can switch it to a WordPress host if they want to publish it on the Internet, because the site itself will have already been created using the well-known WordPress tools.
However, local sites are primarily designed for personal workspaces and cover tasks such as journaling, research, or prototyping.
They are also ideal for learning how to use WordPress without committing to hosting costs. “It offers a fast, commitment-free way to explore, learn, and build, whether the result is a long-term personal project or something you’ll eventually move elsewhere,” WordPress wrote in an announcement.
WordPress even detailed how users can connect with additional plugins to use the same tools you would normally get with WordPress, but on a local scale.
However, there are some limitations, including local storage, which starts at around 100MB. The first launch also takes longer while WordPress downloads to the browser, and because it is not stored on a hosting provider, it is recommended that users backup their sites regularly.
