Sandfall Interactive has said it will not scale up its next game, despite Dark Glade: Expedition 33The great success.
In a recent interview with Edge magazine, Sandfall CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche discussed the development of the 2025 Game of the Year winner and answered questions about the future of the independent studio made up of a small core team.
When asked if the next Sandfall game would be a larger scale development, he explained that there is no interest in expanding the scope.
“No, I think it’s good to have limitations when you’re creative. It’s the best way to be the best version of yourself,” Broche said.
“We could grow now that we have a lot more money, but I would say it’s not tempting for us, because even the management team and I would have to be practical and do things ourselves. We love creating games more than managing, so we want to continue doing that. These last five years were some of the best of my life, and I want to be happy like that again.”
light dark made history at The Game Awards 2025 by taking nine awards out of 12 nominations. It’s fair to say that the game has achieved incredible success as Sandfall’s debut game, to the point that the team couldn’t believe the reception.
“It was completely unexpected for almost everyone,” Broche said. “What really surprised us the most is how much the narrative, the cinematics, and the story resonated with people. That’s the hardest thing to quantify, because it’s always such a personal thing. So the fact that this worked so well, almost instantly, was what made us think, ‘OK, this is a hundred times more than we expected.'”
Producer François Meurisse added: “Part of my job is always ‘plan for the worst, hope for the best,’ so I forbade myself from getting too hopeful. A big part of my job is managing the team’s expectations, so the entire production was inventing a lot of horrible scenarios about how things could go wrong. But it was worth it, because we far exceeded the best we could hope for.”
As for what’s next, Broche has previously revealed that Expedition 33 is “not the end” of the series and that “light dark “It’s the name of the franchise.”
