- Leaked renders show the upcoming Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2
- The highlight is the huge speaker with the JBL logo
- It also has a built-in kickstand.
You’ve heard of pill-shaped speakers, but what about tablet-shaped ones? This and many more puns come to mind when I glimpse the new tablet-speaker hybrid that Lenovo is said to have on the way, and that speaker? It’s huge.
Trusted and veteran mobile leaker Evan Blass has shared with Eat your heart out, JBL Authentics 200.
Forget the idea of tablets having a series of speakers around the edges and built discreetly into bezels, including those found on the first-generation Tab Plus. No, this is a fairly thick protruding unit on the back of the tablet, which from these leaked 3D shots appears to protrude quite a bit.

Look closely and you’ll also see the JBL logo on the back: yes. The manufacturers of the Flip 7 apparently participated in the audio tuning of this device. The previous model had eight of the brand’s speakers, although they were all integrated into the frame of the board, without protruding from behind.
Two other interesting things to point out on this tablet tour: A kickstand lets you prop up the board, so you won’t be playing your songs directly against an oak table. And the volume rocker and power button are also on the back, indicating how much the speaker sticks out: normally, it would be crazy to put them on the back, since you’d be pressing them every time the board was flush with a surface. Obviously, the speaker and stand system holds the board so much that this does not happen.
Blass didn’t mention any of the tablet’s specifications, but he’s probably here to check out the presentations, not the specs.
It’s for movies
On the surface, a tablet with a thick speaker on the back may turn heads – it looks a bit strange and goes against almost all the audio improvements we’ve seen in tablets to date. Why is Lenovo turning this speaker/tablet into Frankenstein’s monster? But the brand’s Tab series has taken a unique approach and if taken with that in mind, it makes sense.
Like Amazon’s Fire tablets, Lenovo’s are designed for entertainment. Options like the Lenovo Idea Tab Pro and Lenovo Tab P12 Pro have excellent speakers and displays, and the brand’s Legion tablets focus primarily on the gaming market.
While many brands offer great displays, it’s the speakers that really push Lenovo’s tablets forward – the brand puts a lot of them in its devices and often gets brands to tune them for it.
The huge module is not a big obstacle either, since the board is probably designed to be used with the kickstand. Lenovo is no stranger to this format, as in the Yoga Tab 13, which had a built-in stand and a micro-HDMI port to be able to connect it to other devices.
So don’t expect the Tab Plus Gen 2 to be a speaker-tablet hybrid; Expect it to be designed for watching audio-intensive movies and TV shows.
