Travis Hunter aims to add its name to the incredibly short list of bidirectional NFL athletes. While the skill in the field of 22 -year -old is undeniable, Hunter is also in the headlines of his classroom talent.

Hunter finished his NFL preseason debut with two receptions. He also took some photos on the defensive side of the ball. But after the 31-25 victory of the Pittsburgh Steelers over the Jacksonville Jaguars, much of the attention went to the average of Hunter’s university qualifications.

“I think it’s a 3.7 or 3.9,” Hunter told reporters in April.

Then Hunter was asked about the mental difficulties that would come with being a bidirectional player. The rookie remained firm in his belief that he was prepared for the task. “That’s all I have to do is play football and go out and study and make sure what I am doing.”

The bidirectional players of the NFL have been a rarity. Chuck Bednarik was the last full -time two -time athlete of the league. Bednarik was an offensive supporter and liner of the Philadelphia Eagles from 1949 to 62.

Sammy Baugh and Don Hutson are also former two -way stars. Baugh was a quartback, defensive and betting. Huston spent his entire NFL career with the Green Bay Packers, playing receiver and security. Later he had a period as an assistant coach of the Packers.

The first -year chief coach of Jaguars, Liam Coen, liked what he saw about Hunter when he aligned on the offensive side of the ball. The coach also hinted that there was a margin of improvement on the defensive side.

“He made a couple of good captures on some options of options and the defensive Tackle that I noticed was lost,” Coen said.

“I will have to see the tape on how I operated a little more, but I thought offensively, it made the right decisions on those options of options. He made a good capture, almost broke out of that in which Trevor left him behind him in that third Down that we talked, but I will have to see the tape a little more to know more.”

Hunter, which was once a very wanted high school recruit, began his career at Jackson State. Then he followed the Hall of Fame Pro Football, Deion Sanders, to Colorado.

Hunter won the Heisman trophy last December. He gave a sincere acceptance speech at the Lincoln Center in New York City, thanking his friends, teammates and his father.

“I want to tell my father something. He’s not here. But I know you’re watching on television,” said the two -way star. “Dad, I love you. All the things you went through, man. Now, look at your eldest son. I did it for you, man. Every time you can’t see me, and the times you came to watch my games. From probably two games in high school to watch me on television every weekend and come to see me, that means a lot to me.”

In April, the Jaguars used the second general selection of Draft to take Hunter’s talents to Jacksonville. The New Orleans Saints receive the Jaguars on August 18 in the second week of preseason action.

The Jaguars welcome the Carolina Panthers on September 7 to open the regular season.
