Joe Burrow’s comments about the future of the NFL left his LSU coach stunned

Joe Burrow shocked the football world last week after making worrying comments about his long-term commitment to professional football.

Burrow entered the league in 2020, but suffered numerous injuries during his budding career. He tore the ACL and MCL in his left knee during his rookie season, suffered a torn ligament in his right wrist in 2023 and missed several games this season with a toe injury.

“If I want to keep doing this, I have to have fun doing it. I’ve been through a lot and if it’s not fun, why do I do it? So that’s the mentality I’m trying to bring to the table,” Burrow said.

There are bound to be ups and downs throughout a football career, but the comments even caught Burrow’s former coach, Ed Orgeron, off guard.

“I’d never heard Joe talk like that, so it caught my attention, yeah,” Orgeron said in a recent interview with Pak Gazette Digital. “But Joe is going to recover. Joe is a fighter. He could have had a bad day, so someone could have said something to him that upset him on the way there. I don’t know, but I think he’s a fighter and I think he has a lot of football left in him. I think he’s going to fight through it.”

Orgeron and Burrow will be forever linked, as Burrow transferred to Orgeron’s LSU and won the Heisman Trophy and a national championship on one of the greatest college football teams of all time. He took advantage of all that to become the No. 1 pick five years ago and earn a lucrative NFL contract.

But Orgeron said he doesn’t want to hold on to his former quarterback unless he feels it’s necessary.

“I think if I feel like I have to reach out to him, I will. But I know there are probably 25, 30 people who saw that, a million who wanted to call them, 25 or 30 who are very close to him and maybe have reached out to him. But if the time comes, when we have to talk, if he needs me, I will always be there,” she said.

“I text him from time to time. I’m not one to hang on my players’ coattails. I wish him the best. We text maybe twice a year, but if I text him right now and he’s not practicing, he’d respond within 30 seconds.”
