Junaid Akbar takes a step down as chief of PAC

Islamabad:

PTI MNA Junaid Akbar confirmed on Tuesday that he had presented his resignation as president of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in line with the directive of the founding president of the party, Imran Khan.

In a video statement, Akbar said he had delivered his resignation to the president of the PTI, lawyer Gohar Ali Khan, and accepted the decision of the party without hesitation.

“Whatever the decision of the party and the decision of Imran Khan, I will not think for a moment and I will accept it easily,” he said.

He added that the presidency of PAC had been a responsibility that the party entrusted to him, and that he would comply with any direction given by Imran, including the resignation of the presidency of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chapter of PTI or renouncing the National Assembly.

The development follows the reports that Imran had asked Akbar to resign from the coveted parliamentary position and, instead, focused on responsibilities within the province.

The reports had previously suggested that PTI’s central information secretary, Sheikh Waqas Akram, had confirmed Akbar’s resignation.

He said Imran transmitted the message through his sister, Aleema Khan, during his recent meeting.

Akram also declared that Aleema transmitted the message to the lawyer Senior Salman Akram Raja after leaving the Adiala jail and announced that Omar Ayub Khan would be appointed new president of PAC.

Akbar had been elected without opposition as president of PAC in January of this year. In the same month, he was appointed by Imran Khan as president of KP of PTI, replacing Prime Minister Ali Amin Gandapur.

The presidency of PAC had remained vacant since the general elections of February 2024, which led to the coalition government led by PML-N to power.

Traditionally, the position is occupied by the opposition leader or its nominee, although there is no legal requirement that links this parliamentary convention.
