- The first tremor recorded at midnight on Monday.
- Epicenter near Malir, depth of about 40 kilometers.
- The third Jolt registered near Korangi at dawn on Tuesday.
Karachi has now experienced 19 minor earthquakes since Sunday, on Tuesday he confirmed the seismic monitoring center of the Pakistan Meteorology (PMD).
The last tremor occurred at 9:57 am, registering a magnitude of 2.8. The epicenter of the 16th earthquake was located northeast of Malir, approximately 15 kilometers from the area, at a depth of 40 kilometers.
Previously, two consecutive tremors were recorded on Monday night, the first at midnight with a magnitude of 2.6 and the second at 12:23 AM measuring 2.8. Both had a depth of 40 kilometers and were focused on the northeast of Malir.
The third tremor occurred at 6:42 am on Tuesday with a magnitude of 3.2 and a less deep depth of 11 kilometers, near Korangi.
Since Sunday night, repeated mild tremors have been felt in Landhi, Quaidabad, Malir and the Karachi neighborhoods, raising concerns among residents. No significant damage or injury have been reported.
Reason behind the tremors
The chief meteorologist Aamir Haider attributed the ongoing seismic activity to the activation of the Landhi Fallas Line, which according to him is going through a normalization phase.
According to Haider, soft earthquakes can continue until another week, since energy is gradually released from the failure line. He explained that this slow energy release helps prevent the risk of an important earthquake.
“This particular failure has been activated after several decades,” he said, adding that the superficial depth of recent earthquakes is the reason why they feel more intensely throughout the city.
Haider emphasized that buildings directly on the fault line should be able to resist tremors of up to magnitude 6. He also pointed out that the failures that run through Karachi have been historically identified and documented.
Responding to concerns about cracks that are developed in homes, Haider clarified that such problems are related to structural integrity and not necessarily linked to seismic activity.
He also mentioned the presence of another failure line near Than Bula Khan, contributing to the general seismic activity in Karachi and its surroundings.
Where and when did quakes be carried out?
The activity of the earthquake began on Sunday, June 1, with a tremor of the magnitude of 3.6 at 5:33 pm. This initial event, which occurs at a depth of 10 km, focused near Quaidabad.
On Monday, June 2, he saw a great activity throughout the day and until the night. Early in the morning he brought a tremor of 3.2 at 1:06 am near the city of Gadap, at a depth of 12 km. This was followed by two magnitude tremors plus 3.2 near Quaidabad at 10:29 am and 11:04 am, both at a depth of 10 km.
In the middle of the morning, at 11:45 am, there was a tremor of magnitude 3.1 to the southeast of Malir, also at a depth of 10 km. The afternoon saw a tremor of 2.2 at 12:17 pm, 5 km to the southeast of Malir, at a depth of 29 km, and an event of magnitude of 2.4 deeper at 1:11 pm, 11 km east of Malir, with a substantial depth of 188 km.
Later in the day, a tremor of magnitude of 2.9 occurred near the city of DHA at 1:38 pm, at a shallow depth of 5 km, followed by an event of magnitude of 3.0 at 8:49 pm, 30 km east of DHA, also at a depth of 5 km.
As the night progressed, a tremor of magnitude 2.4 was felt at 11:16 pm, 10 km southeast of Malir, at a depth of 10 km, with another tremor of magnitude of 3.1 at 11:56 pm, 20 km southeast of DHA, at a depth of 50 km.
The seismic activity continued until Tuesday, June 3. Early Tuesday, at 12:00 am, there was a tremor of the magnitude of 2.6 to 5 km southeast of Malir, at a depth of 49 km. Little more than 20 minutes later, at 12:23 am, another tremor was recorded, measuring 2.8 magnitude, 5 km northeast of Malir, at a depth of 40 km.
An event of magnitude 3.4 occurred at 12:53 am, 10 km northwest of Dha Karachi, at a depth of 20 km. At 12:03 am, a tremor of magnitude 3.1 reached 53 km northeast of DHA, at a depth of 10 km.
Later in the morning, at 4:31 am, a tremor of magnitude 2.1 to 2 km northwest of Malir was observed at a depth of 10 km. There was a more significant magnitude tremor at 6:41 am, 29 km southwest of Korangi, at a depth of 10 km. The last tremor reported for the day was at 9:57 am, an event of magnitude 2.8 to 15 km northeast of Malir, at a depth of 40 km.
