The Karachi University Highway has been closed to traffic after damage to a water pipe during the construction of the rapid bus traffic system (BRT), the authorities said on Monday.

The traffic police said that the officials and the machinery of the Water Board had arrived near Old Sabzi Mandi to repair the damaged line.

The closure has interrupted traffic between Hassan Square and New Town, forcing travelers to take alternative routes.

The vehicles that come from NIFE are deviating through the exhibition, while those of Essa Nagri are being redirected to the stadium through the Hassan Square bridge.

The authorities have advised motorists to use alternative routes to avoid congestion.

The BRT project has been the subject of scrutiny for infrastructure -related interruptions. Previously, the Superior Court of Sindh (SHC) summoned the mayor of Karachi and the Secretary of Transportation about the concerns regarding the reduction of trees along the BRT route.

The Secretary of Forests told the Court that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is responsible for the trees within the city, while the jurisdiction of the forest department begins outside the urban limits.

The court sought a KMC report on the matter.
