King’s latest move sparks calls for his boss to step forward

Denmark’s king abandoned a key event amid growing calls for the heir to the throne to take the reins.

King Frederick

The European royals had refused to attend the televised Sport 2025 awards ceremony in Herning.

Danish media reported on 2 January 2026 that King Frederick X had decided not to attend the annual awards ceremony, a major event at which he had previously presented awards.

The palace calendar simply did not include any engagements for that day.

However, this decision sparked disappointment among some, including a local sports editor who suggested that if the king could not attend, the task should be passed to sports-enthusiast Crown Prince Christian.

B.T.Lasse Vøge’s sports editor expressed disappointment at the decision. “For the show and the sport, it is sad and disappointing that the tradition is not maintained,” he wrote.

He continued: “Let’s hope the King returns next year. Or maybe he will pass the task on to Crown Prince Christian, who is also a sports nut.”
