The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has launched an operation throughout the city to eliminate the collection of illegal parking fees, while starting the cancellation of plots that are illegally rented in the project of the municipality of Orangi.
After the announcement of free parking throughout the city for Mayor Murtaza Wahab, and the subsequent directives of Prime Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, KMC launched an offensive against the collection of illegal parking fees. Since the launch of the initiative, three FIR have been registered in relation to the collection of illegal rates, even at the Kharadar Police Station on July 10, after citizen complaints; at the Bhadurabad Police Station on July 28, after a raid from the city’s guardians; And at the Boat Basin police station on July 29, when the culprits were trapped with their hands in the dough.
Wahab has urged citizens not to pay parking charges and inform such incidents to KMC Lypline 1339. He has also ordered the city guardian department to display equipment in free parking locations designated and that performs a regular patrol to guarantee compliance.
Separately, KMC has started cancellation of more than 320 plots illegally leased in the project of the municipality of Orangi, after the mayor ordered an internal investigation.
The investigation revealed that during the mandate of the then director of the Rizwan Khan project, several plots were leased without due process. In 2019, 26 plots were assigned to a single individual, while another 180 were issued to members of the same family and nearby associates. The current project director, Faisal Rizvi, also presented a report that identifies more than 500 irregular allocations in total, including 80 previously identified and 320 discovered in the last phase.
The cancellation process has begun, with related cases sent to the Director General Anticorruption for legal actions.
