ISLAMABAD:

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has recommended Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to award a posthumous civilian award to Aoun Abbas for showing extraordinary bravery in trying to stop the suicide bomber who attacked Khadijatul Kubra Imambargah in Tarlai area of Islamabad.

On February 6, at least 32 worshipers were killed and dozens more injured when a massive bomb destroyed an imambargah in the Tarlai area of Islamabad. The explosion occurred during Friday prayers. The incident has sparked widespread national admiration for Abbas, a local resident who was reportedly preparing for his upcoming wedding and attempted to stop the attacker. His actions have been compared to those of other national heroes who similarly risked everything to protect innocent lives.

In his letter, Governor Kundi expressed his deep sorrow and condolences over the tragic loss of innocent lives in the suicide attack. He paid glowing tribute to Abbas’s “incomparable bravery”, noting that the young martyr bravely confronted the attacker at the entrance and retrained him not to enter the main hall.

Kundi urged the prime minister to posthumously award the Sitara-e-Shujaat or Tamgha-e-Shujaat award in recognition of the young hero’s bold intervention, which he said had averted a much more devastating outcome.

The prime minister had announced Rs 10 million for Abbas during his visit to Imambagah a day ago.

“Abbas, who sacrificed his life in the line of duty, will be remembered with golden words,” Prime Minister Shehbaz had said, stressing that such sacrifices in the fight against terrorism would not be in vain.
