Kuwait points to illegal cryptographic mining, 60 people under investigation for illicit mining

Kuwaitis authorities are taking energetic measures against illegal cryptographic mining, with more than 60 people now under investigation, as part of a radical campaign to eliminate operations without license.

The country’s public prosecution confirmed that the investigations are ongoing and warned that more suspects could be identified in the coming weeks. The “security operation”, carried out last Friday, went to residential properties throughout the country suspected of organizing mining platforms, according to local media.

The operation was coordinated by the senior officials, including interim prime minister Sheikh Fahad al-Jousef and the Minister of Electricity, Dr. Subaih al-Mukhaizeem. The government said it aims to stop the use of unauthorized energy that has forced the national network and has caused blackouts in some areas.

The Ministry of Electricity has begun to disconnect the energy from the properties related to mining. Reconnection will only authorize the Ministry of Interior. Officials are also carrying out follow -up sweeps in several neighborhoods.

Kuwait has applied an “absolute prohibition of all mining activities of virtual assets/cryptocurrencies” under a directive of its anti-launch money committee backed by regulators, including the Kuwait National Bank.
