DIG suggests forming a joint committee composed of officials to carry out territorial studies
KARACHI:
Following the repatriation of Afghan nationals residing in the Afghan Basti, police officials have expressed concern over the possibility of vacant houses and land being illegally occupied.
DIG West Irfan Baloch has warned that the land mafia may try to grab vacant plots in the Afghan camp area, situated within the jurisdiction of Gulshan-e-Maymar police station.
In this regard, the DIG has written a letter to the city police chief.
In his letter, Baloch suggested forming a joint committee comprising officials from the Malir Development Authority (MDA), the deputy commissioner’s office and the police to conduct a survey of the land and ensure that the MDA quickly takes control of the vacant land.
The DIG noted that more than 3,000 houses had been built in the Afghan camp, housing around 15,000 Afghan citizens. However, although the majority have already returned to Afghanistan, approximately 1,500 people remain in the area.
Baloch urged the land control authority to immediately take possession of the vacant houses and land to prevent illegal occupation or encroachment of the area.
