If you had problems solving many of the Wordle puzzles that were served last month, then you are not too hard with yourself: it was the most difficult month in the history of the game.
I have squeezed the numbers and, for my calculation, he left every two months so far in the dust due to difficulty, with an average score for the 31 games of 4.22.
According to the daily figures reported by Worddlebot, the AI Helper tool, which records the average among the thousands of people who play. In turn, I have maintained a list of those averages since the ‘Bot was launched in April 2022, which means that I now have a spreadsheet of 1,221 games by difficulty.
The bad news is that, instead of simply being a statistical anomaly, that difficult career can aim the path to the near future of Wordle. My daily suggestions of Wordle could be even more useful from here.
Wordle month of hell
Regular Wordlers will have no doubts about the difficulty of the game last month, with a series of almost impossible words that cause all kinds of problems.
He was Tizzy, for example, with his repeated lyrics and an average of 4.9, and Poppy with his triple PS and 4.8 score.
It is possible that Foist does not look so difficult, but that was a classic example of the Wordle letters trap games, where the first letter can be changed to make several other words, in this case beam, zo and wet; That also reached 4.8.
Savvy, with his double vs, also hit that score, while Baler in 4.7 was one of the most unpleasant ER games we have recently had. Exile (4.6), nery (4.5) and frill also caused problems, and the fact that Loris (4.2) can be considered easy in this company points to the general difficulty.

But the two worst last month were Jumpy and Gofer, with scores of 5.2 and 5.6, respectively.
Only 21 games in the history of Wordle have passed the 5.0 brand (with another nine with exactly that score), so obtaining two in the two -week space is the nightmare thing.
Jumpy’s problem was that J at the beginning; As my analysis of each Wordle response shows, J is the least common letter in the game, therefore, what is rarely easy. The existence of lumps, Dumpy and Bachy will also have been a factor.
Meanwhile, with Gofer, it was the combination of a end of the emergency room (the most common in the game) and the not -so -common letters that caused the problem. His score 5.6 places him as the fourth the same as hard, only behind Parer, Mummy and Corner, and Rower level.
If any of them could not solve, or even all of them, then it is completely understandable; Worddle is a simple game, but sometimes it can be diabolically complicated.
Harder than the rest
Worddlebot only launched in April 2022, a couple of hundreds of games in the series, so it is possible that December 2021 or March 2022, or another month, was even more difficult. But I doubt it. I have played all the Wordle so far and lost only once, and I certainly do not remember anything like July 2025.
To confirm my feeling, continue the average score of each day to obtain the general average of July, then I repeated the process for each of the other 38 months for which I have full details.
One thing that seemed interesting to me was that July 2025 was not only the most difficult until now, it was the most difficult until now. For a long time.
The general average of the month of 4.22 might not sound much higher than October 2024, the next highest than the list in 4.15, but is statistically significant since there is only a difference of 0.04 between months #2-7 on the list.
In addition, it is a frankness 0.57 conjectures more difficult than the easiest month, December 2023, which reached 3.65, and much higher than the general average of the game of 3.97.
Difficult times approach
A remarkable characteristic of Julio Words was that there were five ‘non -original’ responses among the 31 games.
When Josh Wardle created Wordle, he and his partner elaborated a list of 2,315 words that would form the game’s list of answers, then scheduled to appear one a day for the next six years.
The New York Times eliminated some of them when Wordle bought in 2022, then left the list more or less unchanged for next year. Then, in March 2023, it gave us Guano, the first ‘extra’ solution added to the original pool and the beginning of a new era for Wordle.
Since then, more have followed 17 in total, including gems such as Uvula, Snafu, Primp and Mommy, all of which have been difficult in their own right. But these words have separated, with most months seeing only one or none.
There have been exceptions, with June 2023, November 2024 and May 2025, all have two, and January 2025 with three. But get five in a month, as we did in July, had no precedents.
And all were difficult: Atria was a 4.1, nery at 4.5, Loris was 4.2, Tizzy 4.9 and Gofer so immense 5.6. The average in those five games was an amazing 4.66; All these were genuine head rakes.
And the point is that the NYT will have to continue adding more of these as time passes. This is because we have now passed 1,500 wordles, which means that we only have about 800 original games, with still having no idea what will happen with the game when that list is exhausted.
The intelligent for the NYT is to extend it as long as possible, which means adding more words. And there is the problem. The Wardle list already covers many of the most obvious words of five letters in English, so we can expect most newly aggregate words to be more difficult than the average.
Therefore, you can forget the classic words of Wordle’s start such as the look, the crane and the blackboard that have been added: everyone has already been and gone. So also ultra common words like House, today and down; All have passed Wordle’s responses too. Instead, you can expect more like raft, kazoo, beauty, squid and top; Uncommon words, jargon words, words with unusual letters …
August initially continued the trend of July, with Banjo and Dount in 4.4, but the following games were a little easier; Maybe the NYT was giving us a break. But do not be surprised if things get more difficult again soon, because this game only goes from here. Don’t say they don’t warn you.
