At the beginning of September 2024, Lieutenant General Muhammad As As Malik was appointed new General Director of Intelligence between Services (ISI), as announced by the Government through Pakistan state television (PTV).

The new spy leader would take care of his role on September 30. In particular, the announcement of its appointment was made by PTV, a deviation from the previous practice, since such high -profile appointments were typically announced by the office of the Prime Minister or the Wing of the Military Media.

Lieutenant General Muhammad As As As As Malik, 59, is considered one of the most capable officers of the Pakistan army, particularly under operational command.

Before this event, he served as a general assistant at the General Army Headquarters (GHQ), supervising military administrative affairs, including legal and disciplinary issues, during the last three years.

He has commanded an infantry division in Baluchistan and a infantry brigade in southern Waziristan, both regions that have been focal points of security challenges for almost two decades.

He also received the prestigious sword of honor, granted to the upper cadet of his course.

His academic training includes serving as the main instructor at the University of National Defense (NDU) and as an instructor in the Command and the Personal College, Quetta.

Lieutenant General Muhammad As As Malik is the son of the retired Lieutenant Ghulam Muhammad Malik, who held prominent positions during his career in the 1990s.

Fort Leaveorth Graduate (USA) and Royal College of Defense Studies (United Kingdom), Malik has also held key positions in the Military Operations Directorate.

The retired Lieutenant Naeem Khalid Lodhi described him as a “quiet but very respected officer.”

“Even as a general assistant, he did a substantial work for the well -being of retired soldiers, particularly in relation to pensions and other related issues,” said Gen Lodhi.

The mandate of the general Malik as a general assistant coincided with the main political events, including the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and later disturbances.

After the arrest of Imran, the supporters of his party, Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI), organized protests that resulted in damages to public properties and military facilities.

A former colleague said that Malik’s new role underlines the strong confidence that military leadership has in him.

Founded in 1948, intelligence between services (ISI) remains the main intelligence agency in Pakistan.
