- ‘Moore’s Law is Dead’ YouTuber Says Microsoft May Be Forced to Raise the Cost of Xbox Consoles Due to Global RAM Shortage
- He explained that Sony “planned ahead,” so there likely won’t be an increase in PS5 consoles.
- The cost of Xbox consoles could increase “very soon”, for the third time since May of this year
Microsoft will reportedly have to raise the price of Xbox consoles again “very soon” due to a possible global RAM shortage.
This is according to tech YouTuber ‘Moore’s Law is Dead’ in his new video ‘OpenAI RAM Hoarding Leak’ (via TGP), who spoke with multiple sources at retailers, memory manufacturers, and partners.
They claim that due to rising costs and OpenAI’s new deals with Samsung and SK hynix to secure a significant portion of the world’s DRAM supply for the foreseeable future, Microsoft could be forced to increase the price of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
“[Microsoft] “If you still want an Xbox for some reason at the current price, those prices could go up soon, or the supply could dry up completely because apparently Microsoft sales reps have warned me that this will affect the Xbox series consoles very, very soon. Sooner rather than later.”

Although there appears to be a RAM shortage that could impact Microsoft, MLID said Sony will be saved from raising the price of its PS5 consoles because it “planned ahead.”
“From what I’ve heard, Sony planned ahead, bought large amounts of RAM near the end of the price and therefore they should be fine for months,” the YouTuber added.
“They have enough GDDR6, at least that’s what I’m told. Prices could rise over time; I could see that happening next year… but there’s a reason why Sony is cutting the price of the PlayStation 5 for Black Friday. They’re not doing this just as an extreme move or because sales are bad. They can afford to do it; apparently, they’re not worried about RAM shortages, at least in the short to medium term.”
If Microsoft is forced to raise the cost of its hardware for a third time, prices could skyrocket. It first increased the cost of its consoles in May of this year, with a $100 increase on all Xbox Series X and S models, and then again in September with an increase of up to $70.
It’s been a tumultuous year for Microsoft. Last month, it also announced major changes to Xbox Game Pass, including three updated plans and a massive price increase for the Ultimate membership.
Ultimate now costs $29.99 / £22.99 / AU$35.95 a month, down from $19.99 / £14.99 / AU$22.95. There is also currently no option to purchase a 12-month subscription.
