Paris: French president Emmanuel Macron said he is open to discuss whether France’s nuclear arsenal could help protect his European allies, since he warned that Europe must take the threat of Russia seriously.
France and Great Britain are the only two nuclear powers in Europe.
“Our nuclear deterrent element protects us: it is complete, sovereign, French from beginning to end,” Macron said in his televised speech.
“But, responding to the historical call of the future German chancellor, I have decided to open the strategic debate on the protection of our allies in the European continent through our deterrence (nuclear),” Macron said.
The German Chancellor waiting, Friedrich, Merz has questioned whether NATO would remain in his “current form” for June and advocated conversations with France and Great Britain about the expansion of its nuclear protection.
France’s nuclear deterrence strategy has so far been defensive and is aimed at protecting the country’s own vital interests.
In his televised speech, Macron also said that France would have to spend more in defense and continue to help Ukraine. He recognized the concerns of voters about Russia and the new administration of the United States administration of the international order.
He said he wanted to believe that the United States “will remain by our side”, while he added that Europe must be prepared if that was no longer the case.
“You are legitimately concerned about current events, which are interrupting world order,” Macron told voters.
“Russia has become a threat to France and Europe,” he said, and added that “looking and doing nothing would be crazy.”
European countries are struggling to boost defense expense and maintain support for Ukraine after President Donald Trump froze US military aid to kyiv and fed doubts about Washington’s commitment with his NATO European allies.
Nuclear deterrence
Macron also said he expected to “convince and deter the president of the United States” to impose higher rates on European imports.
In the first days of the Cold War, former President Charles de Gaulle developed a nuclear deterrent element designed to be completely independent of the two dominant powers of the time, the Soviet Union and the United States.
France’s nuclear dissuasive is based on air and sea, with Rafale and Nuclear Submarines capable of hitting at any time, only with the instruction of the French president.
