- The Thunderbolt 5 Lto de Magstor unit is based on its 2020 Thunderbolt 3 model
- TB5 certainly adds speed, but what is the real world benefit for the tape?
- There is no word about prices, but it is unlikely to be cheap
Magstor introduced the first unit of tape Lto Thunderbolt 3 in the world in 2020, combining traditional storage based on ribbons with modern connectivity, and now, the company has announced the first unit of tape Lto Thunderbolt 5 in the world.
The company describes its latest product as the next step to offer flexible file solutions and backup and file file for professionals who work with large volumes of data.
Tape storage continues to be a standard for long -term file needs due to its durability and capacity, and the Thunderbolt 5 LTO unit is designed for use in data environments with data, such as media production and IT IT. When integrating Thunderbolt 5, Magstor hopes to offer a faster and faster connection between the tape hardware and modern computer systems.
Higher speed
The new unit works with macOS and Windows and, although Thunderbolt 5 offers a greater bandwidth than the previous versions, tape speeds remain limited by the format itself.
Although Magstor has not provided many technical specifications, it is a new product since it will admit LTO-9 tapes (compressed capacity of native / 45TB), as its predecessor does.
There is still no confirmation about the compatibility with the next-generation LTO-10 tapes, which is expected to arrive in the second quarter of 2025, which offers a compressed capacity of up to 36 TB and 90 TB, but it would be a lost opportunity if that support is not included.
Thunderbolt 5 achieves data transfer rates of up to 80 Gbps (10 GB/s) bidirectionally in standard mode, and up to 120 Gbps in one direction when the bandwidth impulse mode is used.
LTO-10 is expected to deliver reading speeds of around 472 MB/s, which is a step forward from LTO-8 to 360 MB/Sy LTO-9 to 400 MB/s.
Magstor says that the Thunderbolt 5 Lto unit will be launched at the end of 2025. The price has not yet been announced, but it is unlikely to be cheap.
The LTO-9 Thunderbolt 3 unit of the company is sold for $ 6,299 and if the additional speed of Thunderbolt 5 will justify the inevitable price increase.
“In Magstor, we are committed to exceeding the limits of what is possible in data storage,” said Tim Gerhard, Vice President of Magstor’s product. “After revolutionizing the market with the first Lto Thunderbolt 3 unit, we are excited to raise the bar again with Thunderbolt 5, ensuring that our customers have access to the most powerful and flexible storage solutions available.”
