Mahaha’s family throws doubts about the police claim

The Shikarpur police said Tuesday that the main suspect that killed the journalist of the Sukkur district, Jan Muhammad Mahaha 20 months ago, was shot dead in an operation.

The SSP Shikarpur Shahzeb Chacha confirmed to the media that Sher Muhammad Mahar aka Shereral was shot dead and five to six of his accomplices suffered wounds in the police action carried out in a river area on the limit of the Bhayo Bachal Police Station.

However, the police claim is being considered in advance by the family of murdered journalist who was shot dead in the Sukkur district on August 14, 2023. His brother and demanding of his murder, Karamullah Mahaha, said in a news channel that his men visited Lakhi Ghulam Sha Hospital where he took Shaeral’s body for postmortem.

But, he said, they were not allowed to see the body. “We were happy and congratulated each other when we listened to Sheral’s death, but we have a strong doubt that he was not killed in a police operation. He prefers died of heart arrest,” Karamullah said.

He also referred to the initial opinions of the legal officers of doctor who performed Sheral’s autopsy and said that even the doctor did not clarify how he was killed. According to him, the body of the accused person was placed in ice slabs in the health center. The SSP, meanwhile, argued that they ran into Shereral while looking for a Dacoit Nasrullah Jatoi sought.

According to him, the police operation assisted by the Rangers in the river areas of Shikarpur and other neighboring districts, has continued since October 2024. “Sheral was also our goal. His hiding place was destroyed.” Although the SSP claimed to have information on the injury of five or six suspects in the operation, the police could only put in their hands the body of Shereral.

Mahaha was shot dead in Queens Road by armed men, riding a motorcycle, when he was heading home from the office of his news channel around 9.15 pm he retired three shots and succumbed to his fatal wounds at the Hira hospital two hours later.

His brother nominated 12 suspects with names in the FIR in addition to four strangers. The defendant included Sheral, Naseer Mahar, Qurban Mahar, Roshan Mahar, Gulzar Mahar and Mir Muhammad Mahaha, and others, all the residents of Chak Village in Shikarpur, which also turned out to be the ancestral people of the journalist.
