Maria Shriver remembers her divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger as a “brutal” experience.
“My heart broke, my spirit broke, broke what remained of me,” the journalist wrote in his new poetry book I am MaryFor an extract.
Shriver, 69, has written about how his world collapsed between 2009 and 2011, specifically with the Terminator The admission of the actor to have engendered a loving child with his love house Mildred Baena, according to People magazine.
“Without my marriage, my parents, a job: the prey of my life of a lifetime separated,” Maria added, referring to her mother and father, Eunice and Sargent Shriver, who died in 2009 and 2011 respectively.
“Now, much has been written about the end of my marriage, and I don’t feel that I need or want to discuss it here, or anywhere,” the publication also cited the extract available with them.
For those not versed, the former governor of California welcomed the son Joseph Baena, now 27 years old, in 1997 with his keys while he was married to Shriver, who did not realize the secret son of her husband until she confessed during her 2011 marriage advisory session.
Shriver also remembered his children: Katherine, 35, Christina, 33, Patrick, 31, and Christopher, 27), face the news with “grace, value and courage.”
“All about his world and the holiness of his home were uprooted in an instant,” he wrote.
The author of “What’s Heaven” said that “she was consumed with pain and torn of confusion, anger, fear, sadness and anxiety” and “I wasn’t sure who was, where he belonged.”
“Honestly, it was brutal, and was terrified,” he added.
The mother of four four said telling herself “Maria, this does not have to be the end of you”, at that time after crying in the dark on the floor of her hotel room.
Shriver requested the divorce of Schwarzenegger, 77, in July 2011, but his divorce did not end until December 2021.
Schwarzenegger has also addressed the dissolution of his marriage and half decade infidelity in a 2023 Netflix documentary.
“The reason I feel reluctant to talk about that is because every time I do it, open the wounds again. I think I have caused enough pain to my family due to my curse.”
“I will have to live with him the rest of my life. People will remember my successes and will also remember my failures. This is an important failure,” he shared.
