According to a report of AFP, Pope Francis died on Monday at age 88, one day after making a very anticipated appearance in Saint Peter Square on Easter Sunday, said the Vatican in a statement.

“Dear brothers and sisters, it is with deep sadness that I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francisco,” Cardinal Kevin Farrell said in the statement published by the Vatican on his Telegram channel.

“This morning at 7:35 am (0535 GMT) the bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the father’s house.

“All his life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and his Church.”

Francis’s death occurred days after his surprise meeting with King Charles during the state visit of the monarch to Italy.

Pope Francis and King Charles had not previously announced a meeting at the Vatican earlier this month during the state visit to Italy, announced the Buckingham Palace and the Vatican.

King Charles and Queen Camilla had to make a formal state visit to the Vatican, but postponed their plans after the doctors prescribed Francis two months of rest after the pontiff experienced a serious episode of double pneumonia.
