- Meta Horizon Workrooms will close starting February 16, 2026
- Companies didn’t seem to use the Quest headset for VR meetings
- The Meta Quest commercial headsets are also being retired; consumer versions remain
Meta is pulling the plug on its business-focused VR hardware and services to focus on artificial intelligence, but its consumer-focused VR business will continue.
The company confirmed that it will shut down Horizon Workrooms, its virtual reality workspace app, on February 16, 2026, after which all user data will be permanently deleted.
The Meta Quest commercial headphones will also be withdrawn from sale, although, interestingly, the deadline for this is four days later, on February 20.
“Meta Horizon has since evolved into a social platform that supports a wide range of productivity apps and tools,” the company wrote.
While Meta Horizon lives on for consumers, business users are being asked to look to other collaboration platforms like Teams and Zoom to stay in touch with their colleagues.
When it launched, Horizon Workrooms was described as a virtual reality remote collaboration platform. It was released in beta in August 2021 for Meta Quest 2 devices, but participants could also join on the computer via a regular video call.
Horizon Workrooms was designed to give more context to calls, such as virtual meeting rooms filled with avatar-like participant personas and presentation screens.
Meta does not publish specific figures for Horizon Workrooms users, but has previously reported this The edge The entire Horizon platform had 300,000 users as of early 2022. This seemed to be mainly attributed to Horizon Worlds, a community virtual reality game.
Although hybrid work is here to stay, many reports detail worker burnout associated with excessive meetings. Perhaps quick video calls are less tiring than full VR experiences. They are certainly cheaper.
